Overview

Roopkund is a small glacial lake at 4,800 m, best known for the human remains found at its edge. Getting there means eight days through oak and rhododendron forest, then out onto Ali and Bedni Bugyal - two of the largest high-altitude meadows in the Himalaya - with Trishul and Nanda Ghunti standing over them the whole way. This is a genuinely hard trek: long days, real altitude, and snow on the final stretch well into June.

Highlights

  • Ali and Bedni Bugyal, among the largest alpine meadows in India
  • Trishul and Nanda Ghunti in view for most of the walk
  • The glacial lake at 4,800 m
  • Ancient Nanda Devi temples at Wan and Bedni

Day by day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Kathgodam to Lohajung

Long drive through Almora and Gwaldam to the trailhead village of Lohajung (2,300 m).

  2. Day 2

    Lohajung to Didna

Drive to Kulling, cross the Neel Ganga and climb through forest to Didna village.

  3. Day 3

    Didna to Ali Bugyal

Steep climb out of the treeline into the first of the meadows. Camp with Trishul directly ahead.

  4. Day 4

    Ali Bugyal to Patar Nachauni

A gentle traverse across Bedni Bugyal, past the Nanda Devi temple, to camp at 3,800 m.

  5. Day 5

    Patar Nachauni to Bhagwabasa

Short but steep day over Kalu Vinayak pass to the last camp at 4,100 m. Deliberately short - this is the acclimatisation that makes the summit day possible.

  6. Day 6

Roopkund and back to Patar Nachauni

Pre-dawn start for the lake at 4,800 m, then a long descent all the way back to Patar Nachauni.

  7. Day 7

    Patar Nachauni to Lohajung

Down through the meadows and forest to Lohajung.

  8. Day 8

    Lohajung to Kathgodam

Questions about this package

It is the hardest trek we run. Expect six to eight hours of walking a day for a week, a summit day that starts before dawn and covers 1,000 m of climbing and descent, and camping above 4,000 m. You should be able to jog 5 km in under 35 minutes before you come.

Yes. We ask for at least one Himalayan trek above 3,500 m beforehand. Roopkund is a poor choice for a first high-altitude trek, and we would rather put you on Chopta or Har Ki Dun first and have you come back for this one.

May to June and September to October. The monsoon makes the meadows dangerous and the winter buries the route. Snow on the final stretch is normal even in late May.
