Overview

Madmaheshwar - Madhyamaheshwar on the survey maps - is where Shiva's navel is said to have appeared, making it the second of the Panch Kedar. It sits at 3,289 m at the head of a green valley, and the only way in is on foot: roughly 16 km from Ransi, taking most people 8 to 9 hours. That length is the whole reason it stays quiet. Kedarnath sees thousands a day in season; here you will pass a handful of people and a lot of forest.

Highlights

  • Second temple of the Panch Kedar
  • Overnight at the temple for the morning aarti
  • Budha Madmaheshwar viewpoint for Chaukhamba at sunrise
  • Dhari Devi and Omkareshwar temples on the drive in

Day by day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Delhi to Ransi

Overnight drive from Delhi, reaching the hills by morning. Stops at Devprayag where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet, Dhari Devi on the riverbank, and Omkareshwar temple at Ukhimath - the winter seat of Kedarnath. Overnight at Ransi village (2,150 m).

  2. Day 2

    Ransi to Madmaheshwar

The long day. Walk down to Gaundhar, cross the river at Bantoli where two valleys meet, then climb steadily through Khatara and Nanu to the temple. Around 16 km and 8 to 9 hours. Evening aarti, and a night at 3,289 m.

  3. Day 3

    Budha Madmaheshwar, then return

Early climb to Budha Madmaheshwar for a clear line on Chaukhamba, Neelkanth and Kedar peak. Descend to Ransi through the afternoon and start the drive back to Delhi.

Questions about this package

Moderate. It is not technical at any point, but 16 km with a steady climb takes most people 8 to 9 hours, and you do it with a day pack. If you can walk 5 km comfortably on a slope, you will manage - just slowly.

Same deity, a fraction of the crowd. Kedarnath handles thousands of pilgrims a day in season and has a paved path the whole way. Madmaheshwar has a forest trail, a handful of tea shops, and on most days you will have long stretches to yourself.

May and June, then September and October. The temple closes for winter around November when the deity moves to Ukhimath. July and August bring heavy monsoon rain and leeches on the forest section, so we do not run departures then.

Delhi, with an overnight drive on day zero. If you are coming from Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun we can pick you up en route instead - tell us when you enquire and we will adjust the price.
